TGS 2016: Square Enix drops fresh look at Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8

With another year of Tokyo Game Show underway, Square Enix is flexing its action-RPG muscles with a fresh look at Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue. Like other trailers before it, the TGS trailer showcases snippets from all of the titles that make up 2.8, but places the biggest emphasis on Aqua’s journey in Kingdom Hearts Birth By Sleep 0.2.

Square Enix has been pretty tight lipped on what gamers might find in Aqua’s journey, as it’s one of the last remaining puzzles prior to the release of Kingdom Hearts III. Previous trailers have stuck to what feels like the same footage of Aqua running down a hallway, but this trailer shows Aqua apparently battling darker forces within her mystery realm.

What really excites me about this trailer isn’t only the emphasis on Aqua, although she is one of the more interesting characters to come out of the series, but the taste of the remixed music from Utada Hikaru. The progression of the series has always been linked thematically to Hikaru’s work, with new tracks signally a new direction.

While the new track doesn’t completely redefine the wheel, it does signal that the arrival of the highly anticipated Kingdom Hearts III is almost here.

Check out the video below to see how Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 has grown since its initial announcement.

Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue hits the PlayStation 4 Jan. 24, 2017, while a Kingdom Hearts event announcing more information is expected this December.
